Tales From The Mancave | Testing | Canon 35mm f/1.4 L | New Glass

****DICLAIMER – Please note my children were not hurt in any way or forced to cry for these shots, the tears in this shot are the result of his own actions, he stubbed his toe on the door.****

With a recent change in camera bodies from a crop sensor to a full frame, my beloved 30mm f/1.4 from Sigma is pretty much finished, so a replacement is required. I know how good the Sigma primes are so there’s no point trying the FF version, so I looked at Canon’s range of primes. A 50mm (The 30mm on a crop is about the same) is good focal length but I wanted to look at something a little wider. So I have hired the 35mm for 10 days to see how I get on with it before make the purchase.
35mm is a little wider, but not too wide, if that makes sense and being f/1.4 it will great in those low light conditions. Build quality is far superior to my sigma to, as you would expect from a L series lens from Canon.
The lens arrived for my hire period yesterday and I just had to get out and play. After a few random shots in the garden it was time to turn my camera on my kids..
The first shot above is actually the last shot I took that day. But I just had to get it..
Inital thoughts. I love it.
What more can I add. I loved my 30mm sigma but at times it seemed to close on a crop sensor so this 35mm is just the perfect focal length. It’s tack sharp right to the edges at f/4 and above, possibly a little soft at f/1.4, but only compared to f/4, compared to my old 30mm it is leagues ahead in sharpness. It focuses quick and tracks really well on the 5dmkii. Even with strong back lighting it pulls in the focus fast.
I know I have only had a few hours messing with it, but I can honestly say sending this lens back is going to be a very hard thing to do, so much so I will be on the hunt for my own copy very soon, if not already 😉

I pushed the processing a lot on this shot. But the lens coped with the harsh back lighting very well. (f/2.8)

In good light it locks on focus fast. (f/2.8)

A bit of misfocus here but I love this shot none the less, and I am posting it to prove there was smiles, not all tears or sullen faces. Honest…
